Why Are My Interior Lights and Dashlights Flickering?

why are my interior lights and dashlights flickering?

Finnegan Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram can help you learn why your interior lights and dashlights are flickering.

If you observe your vehicle lights flickering while driving, it’s probably due to a failing battery. If your car battery checks out fine, there are other common trouble spots that may be causing the issue. No matter the cause, it’s imperative that you have the problem repaired ASAP. If your car lights aren’t functioning properly, you could become a danger to other drivers.

The 3 places dimming car lights generally happen are:

  • Lights on the Dashboard
  • Interior overhead lights
  • Headlights

Because the battery is the most convenient component to replace, this is where most of us will look first. If you think the battery is bad, bring it to us so we can properly diagnose the problem and get the right OEM battery for your vehicle. While there are cases that result from a dying battery, there are other culprits to consider.

A dying light switch, either the headlight switch knob or the interior dimmer, should also be checked out if you have flickering car lights. In some rare situations, just replacing a worn-out switch may solve the problem, especially in old vehicles or vehicles with excessive wear. If your car doesn’t fall into either category, there’s a chance it could be symptoms of a bigger concern with the electrical system.
Diagnosing these concerns can be overwhelming, so if you notice any issues with the lights flickering on your vehicle, bring it in immediately. Our technicians will do a thorough diagnosis and offer you options for fixing the flickering lights.

Alternator

Flickering lights could also be one of the signs that your alternator is going bad. Think of it like this, you start your vehicle with power from the battery, but to keep your vehicle running, the power comes from the alternator. If you drive an older car with halogen lights, you may notice them gradually get dimmer with a dying alternator. On newer cars with HID or LED lighting, they may flicker or just stop working altogether.

Bad bulbs or fuses

Bad bulbs or fuses

If the vehicle battery isn’t the reason for your flickering car lights, it might be a failing bulb. Dead light bulbs are an easy fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new energy-efficient LED bulbs.
If it’s a bad fuse, you may be looking at a larger problem than you had originally anticipated. A fuse fails when there is too much electrical current runs through it. For example, if the anti-lock brakes are connected to a 10amp fuse, and the fuse gets over 10amps of electrical current, the fuse would fail. In this situation, your anti-lock brakes would fail due to the blown fuse. If there’s a fuse that consistently fails, bring it in so we can thoroughly diagnose the larger, potentially more dangerous problem.
