What are the differences between an extended cab and a crew cab?
Doesn’t it seem like it doesn’t matter where you look, trucks are everywhere? Long gone are the days where pickup trucks were vehicles made for work and utility. Today’s pickups can be outfitted to be as luxurious as the iconic names in luxury. So, it doesn’t matter if you require a workhorse or want the lap of luxury, there is a pickup truck for you. After deciding if you must have 4-Wheel Drive (or just Rear-Wheel Drive), the next big decision is to decide what cab size works best for you.
As one might expect, an Extended Cab pickup (can also be called a Double Cab pickup) is basically just a Regular Cab with extra room behind the front seating. When they were first introduced, extended cab pickups were available for purchase as 2-doors and had small jump seats behind the front row. These days they may be called a Double Cab pickup truck, these trucks now feature slim, second-row doors for access to the rear cargo area. Even though there are 2 rows of seats, an Extended Cab truck wouldn’t be the ideal vehicle for road trips, even if it can carry more passengers.
A regular cab pickup has one row of seats with a small amount of legroom and storage space, as you might guess. A regular cab was once the one way to buy pickups. In many regular cab pickups, the seats almost touch the rear of the cab. This style is the more utilitarian version of a pickup truck and can usually be ordered with manual locks and windows. A regular cab is made for work, not for hauling your friends and family around.
While maybe not as clear as the previous cab models, a Crew Cab pickup boasts four regular-size doors and the space to hold your whole ‘crew.’ Crew Cab pickups are made to haul more of the driver’s stuff and-or passengers. For some people, these pickups have replaced the 4-door sedan as the family vehicle. A Crew Cab truck’s larger size and more powerful engine choices are unavailable in the 4-door sedan segment while still being able to offer the comfort and legroom that families desire.
